Supporters of English football shelled out a hefty £240 million (equivalent to $289 million) backing their squad throughout the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as revealed by a recent analysis from Worldpay.

The research determined that England dominated in payment processing figures among all the competing nations over their five World Cup games. This spending spree culminated during England’s match against France, reaching an impressive 11,000 transactions every minute leading up to the start of the game.

Establishments across England also witnessed a substantial business boom, with payments soaring by 200% during the World Cup. They handled an incredible 60 million transactions—a figure usually observed over two standard Saturday evenings combined!

As anticipated, weekend evening matches drew the most significant betting action. The final showdown between France and Argentina took the lead as the most wagered-on game of the tournament, peaking at a remarkable 11,500 transactions per minute. This amounted to a considerable £2.8 million in processed payments solely for wagers placed during the final, contributing to a total authorized value surpassing £50 million for the match.

The information also indicated that FIS (Worldpay’s parent company) observed its leading gambling vendors process a combined £67.8 million in payments on game days, signifying a notable 30% rise compared to the 2020 Euros.

“As the domestic football season is in full flow, and a packed holiday fixture schedule is on the horizon, pubs and betting vendors will be anticipating a similarly prosperous few weeks ahead,” remarked Alex Morgan-Moodie, Director of Vertical Specialties at Worldpay, reflecting on the observations.

Flawless transaction methods are becoming increasingly crucial for wagering platforms aiming to provide their users with an exceptional experience. This is particularly relevant during major tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup, which, as per GeoComply data, ranked as the second most favored athletic competition among American gamblers this year.
